Adel Sharif is Professor of Water Engineering and Process Innovation at the University of Surrey, UK. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Osmosis Research and Applications, (CORA) at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
The centre’s research activities in the area of osmosis science have resulted in a number of inventions in the rea of desalination, water treatment, and renewable power generation. Dr Sharif is the Founder Director of Surrey Aquatechnology Ltd (SURRAT), a University of Surrey spin-out company formed to commercialise the intellectual properties and research outputs of CORA. Dr Sharif and his team have also been awarded the DTI Smart Award (Small Merit Award for Research and Technology) for their work on Biodesulphurisation and microbial enhanced oil recovery.
He has been recently selected by Al-Jazeera-Net as being amongst the top Arab Scientists outside the Arab world who have made outstanding achievements in their field of work. Dr Sharif is the winner of the Muslim News Award 2007 for Excellence in Engineering, Science and Technology. He has over 60 publications; is an inventor and co-inventor of 8 patents. Dr Sharif is a chemical engineer with a first degree from Baghdad University, Iraq and MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Wales, UK. Professor Sharif is the winner of the UK Royal Society 2005 Brian Mercer Senior Award for Innovations in Science and Technology.
