Dr Ghalia Al-Thani

Dr Ghalia Al-Thani is Chair of the board of directors of the National Health Authority in Qatar, a position she has held since 2005. She qualified as an MD from the University of Jordan in 1987 and went on to specialize in pediatrics in London where she attained her MRCP (UK) in 1992.

She later went on to sub-specialize in pediatric gastroenterology and established the pediatric G.I and Hepatology section at the Hamad Medical Cooperation where she continues to practice till today.

She also held the position of pediatric department chair for 9 years 1996-2005.

She began working in the social sector in 1998 when she became a committee member and later chair of the committee on people with special needs. During her time with the committee, the world famous Shafallah center for children with special needs was established. She later became chair of the committee of childhood which belongs to the supreme council of family affairs. She continues to hold that position till today.

In 2001, Dr Ghalia was elected to be a member of the UN committee on the rights of the child. She was re-elected with the highest number of votes in February 2005.
